The “R” Word

The “R” word (running) yep if you want to join, accept the fact you WILL be running. now i know what your thinking, you must be a keen runner and train all the time.

well no, god did not build me to run i’m not blessed with athletic ability.

but i found my self an app for running called RunKeeper which is ok its gets the job done(in my opinion) its comes with a range of training strategy’s.

Next you want to get good at running then do lots of it, I got as far a basic training last time i was in the forces. And my run time was 12mins 45Seconds which was a fail on my mile and a half. But the army has a program called AFS (Army Foundation Scheme), the army had realised that people are not as fit as they wanted, so you were placed in an AFS program until you reached the standard needed and you moved to main stream training.

I started with a 2.5km run which is was doing once every 3 days, with a gym workout the day after the run. then 2weeks later i moved to 5km (3miles) and i try to get this under 30min (British Army Standard). I don’t road run, you want a work out run on undulating ground (field Running), the ground is elastic and will absorb more of your impact energy making you work harder.

After 2 weeks of running 5km 3 times a week i then upped it to adding 5miles once a week, so 4 times a week running with gym work even if it is on the same day (ouch). Yep there where days that i hurt but as i say listen to your body and you will know when to keep gym work light and when to slow your run a concentrate in technique.

make sure you vary your run from hill work to fartleks (speedplay) once again the app will help you, and make sure you time your mile and a half.
